Welcome to the B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network’s WhaleReport app!
Help the Sightings Network collect data on the presence and distribution of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) and sea turtles in B.C. waters. If you spot a cetacean or sea turtle in the area, utilize the WhaleReport App to document your observation and directly contribute to crucial conservation-focused research.
After submission, your sightings will be visible on your personalized map in the ‘Map’ section. Your report will undergo evaluation by the Sightings Network team, and follow-up inquiries may be made. The Sightings Network values your input and eagerly anticipates receiving your sightings.
Utilize the WhaleReport app to:
- Learn more about the 23 species of cetaceans and four species of sea turtles residing in B.C. waters
- Consult the Be Whale Wise guidelines for responsible marine wildlife viewing
- Log sightings when outside of mobile network coverage
- Monitor and review sightings you’ve reported via a personal sightings abstract
About the Sightings Network:
The B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network is a research and conservation initiative affiliated with the Vancouver Aquarium in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Cetacean Research Program.
The Sightings Network consists of numerous observers throughout British Columbia who document their encounters with whales, dolphins, porpoises, and sea turtles. Anyone can participate as an observer, and each report enhances our comprehension of the distribution and occurrence of cetaceans and sea turtles in B.C. waters.
In British Columbia, 12 species or populations of cetaceans and sea turtles are indigenous and are listed under the Species at Risk Act. These creatures face various threats from human activities like entrapment in fishing equipment, disruption by marine vessels, and contamination buildup.
Discover more about cetaceans, sea turtles, and their protection at www.wildwhales.org.
Utilization of Sightings Network Data:
The compiled data are engaged in conservation and research endeavors to enhance understanding and safeguard cetaceans and sea turtles inhabiting B.C. waters. Sightings data are not publicly disseminated to prevent promotion of high-activity sites for cetaceans and sea turtles, thus reducing interference from marine vessels in those locations. The data may be requested for application in academic research, conservation evaluation and strategy development, species recovery planning involving critical habitat identification, as well as environmental impact appraisal, examination, and mitigation.
This app was developed through the generous backing of Mountain Equipment Co-op, BG Group, and the Government of Canada.
This initiative was made possible with financial support from the Government of Canada facilitated by the Department of the Environment. The British Columbia Cetacean Sightings Network is a collaboration between the Vancouver Aquarium and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
